Who is Amethyst?

I’m just a person who’s trying to make sense of the world by writing.

Growing up, I wasn’t very good at socialising and many normal interactions with people confused me, which predictably meant I had very few friends. As you can probably imagine, being a loner kind of sucks, especially if you don’t know why people hate you. Was it something I said? Something I did? Was it because on the day of the interaction, mercury was in retrograde?

Not only did I have difficulties interacting with other people, but learning how to be a ‘proper human’ was super confusing as well. Apparently, there are rules that everyone is supposed to have picked up by a certain point and nobody thought to tell me about them. Things like how to read a room, what to say during disagreements so you don’t come across as rude, and when to tell little white lies. I was just expected to automatically know these things.

Of course, I didn’t know back then that I was on the autism spectrum (self-diagnosed, getting a proper diagnosis is super expensive as an adult) but my obvious lack of understanding on how to be a ‘proper human’ certainly made things a lot harder than they ought to be. But one thing gave me respite from the daily onslaught of confusion—writing.
